Theoretical Pressure

How to calculate Theoretical Pressure

Leaks Process

Theoretical Pressure

Determine theoretical pressure

• The reason for determining theoretical pressure is: Safety and practicality

• Angle Valve Replacement • Flow and Pressure Tests • Customer Complaints

2

Determine theoretical pressure • After arrival at correct location, verify Meter and MIU number

• Go to (PUMA) Public Utility Mapping Application https://maps.raleighnc.gov/imaps/?config=puma • Select property search tab

• Enter address (Property will be outlined in red)

3

Determine theoretical pressure

• Locate meter on map (represented by blue W)

• Select Layers Tab

4

Determine theoretical pressure

• Find Water Distribution Layer

• Check water pressure zones box within water distribution layer

5

Determine theoretical pressure

• Find numerical pressure zone value • Record this number (In this example 495)

• Return to Layers tab • Leave Water Pressure Zones selected within the water distribution layer

6

Determine theoretical pressure

• Find Topo box in Layers

• Turn Topo on

• Find the topography line that includes the water meter • Notate the number found (In this example 238)

7

Determine theoretical pressure

• Subtract topography from the pressure zone

495-238= 257 • Divide the sum by 2.31 (257/2.31= 111.2 PSI) • Or Multiply the sum by 0.433 (257 X 0.433= 111.2 PSI)

8

Determine theoretical pressure

• 111.2 is the Theoretical Pressure • This determines if we can repair under pressure or not • If under 80 PSI you may repair the leak under pressure • Repairs over 80 PSI is not recommended without crimping or freezing service.
